Whether you’re a staunch defender of Batman v Superman or an archenemy of the concept of superheroes filtered through Snyder-vision, most of us can agree that the movie is a dark, serious affair. When the original Suicide Squad Comic Con trailer leaked it appeared to match the grim tone of BvS.
Early jokes and backlash about DC’s apparent “no jokes” policy might have influenced a change of direction, at least as far WB’s marketing department was concerned.
Instead of being soundtracked by a slow, somber cover of the BeeGees “I Started a Joke”, the next trailer was backed by the mood-shifting, chaotic, fun and only quasi-sad “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
And now the latest trailer up top–the “Blitz Trailer”–is punched up first by “You Don’t Own Me,” and then “Ballroom Blitz.”
“We can have fun too!” DC and Warner Brothers seem to be screaming. “Our moody movie about damaged, psychotic supervillains sent on a suicide mission–with the word ‘suicide’ right there in the title–is actually more of a bad-guy-centric Guardians of the Galaxy. Did we say damaged and psychotic earlier? Because we meant quirky and quick with a quip. That’s what these guys are. Harley has a High Striker carnival mallet, for God’s sake! Are you people happy now? Because we are! See?”
And you know what? Bravo to the DC / WB marketing department. I’m sold. This looks like it could be fun. Or it could be a magnificent swerve. We’ll have to wait until August 5th to find out.
