Nearly 20 years since it was first released, Unbreakable will get its first proper sequel in 2019, at long last. In the meantime, its director–once the young, unexpected prince of popular Hollywood filmmaking–has reached his professional nadir and then clawed his way back into reasonable success. Glass may not be the film that will return Shyamalan to the peak of his powers, but it can put him as close to the summit as anything he’s made since Unbreakable, or maybe the first 4/5ths or so of Signs.
This second trailer gives us more action and openly presents plot points previously presumed to exist based on what was already known of the film. Yes, Mr. Glass and The Horde will team up, (and there appear to be a few hints at perhaps one or two more villains joining this evil alliance) and David Dunn appears to be the only hero who can stop them. Unless, of course, Casey Cooke–the sole survivor of Split–turns out to be a superhero herself. She does have the alliterative name, after all. Then again, so did Lois Lane and Lana Lang, but I think she’s more likely to have latent powers of her own that manifest when at some critical juncture. Possibly when Dunn is in danger of drowning, which appears to be a possibility that will occur based on the chills-inducing 1-on-1 fight he’s having with The Beast?
Damn it, I told myself I would abstain from too much speculation about what may or may not happen in the movie based on this trailer, so let me stop right there. What more needs be said, after all? Glass is arriving in January, and looks ready to deliver on the wealth of promise Shyamalan’s first foray into superhero fiction showed way back in the year 2000.
