“Wailing” is one of those verbs often attached to ghostly activity. Spirits wail, or weep, or scream, or sometimes even holler. It’s a good horror word, is what I’m getting at, and given the positive reviews heaped on Na Hong-jin’s The Wailing, it appears to be put to proper use as a title for this creepy South Korean thriller. The trailer is certainly unsettling. I don’t believe the title of the movie is also the name of the disease people are apparently afflicted with in the story, but if my doctor told me, “I’m sorry, it looks like you’ve come down with The Wailing,” I’d ask for euthanasia on the spot.
